OECD report offers a roadmap to address employment inequities

Published:

The OECD Mental Health and Work: New Zealand report has recommendations on the need for integrated health and employment support services. Released in December 2018, this report informs how to increase access to evidence-based practices in mental health and employment in New Zealand. The report acknowledges that employment is a health intervention, and the crucial role of integrated policy, funding and service delivery approaches.

Another key report has been released in the past year, highlighting the need to increase access to evidence-based practices in mental health and employment. The He Ara Oranga: Report of the Government Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction also highlighted the importance of employment support, for those facing mental health challenges.

It’s heartening to see both reports acknowledge that employment is a health intervention, and the crucial role of integrated policy, funding and service delivery approaches.

The government’s response

The government have now released their response to the recommendations in the OECD mental health and work report; accepting, accepting in principle, and giving further consideration to 18 out of 20 of the recommendations. Details can be found in the attached extract from the cabinet paper Response to the inquiry into mental health and addiction (May 2019).
